Dandelion-like, more than 10 in. tall, with soft white hairs when young, hairless with age. Milky sap. Leaves linear to oblong, tips sharply pointed, entire to deeply lobed. Leaf lobes point outward or toward tip. Single flower head on long bare stalk, cup of overlapping papery bracts often reddish on exterior, many yellow petals closing by noon on sunny days, often drying to pinkish color. Grows in meadows, woodlands, at low and mid elevations. Easily confused with Microseris borealis, M. bigelovii, and A. glauca var. laciniata.
