Erect stem, 2–3 flat leaves. Leaves withering at flowering. Flowers at stem top in loose ball of 10–50 blossoms on individual stalks to 1/2 in., 2 bracts beneath the cluster. Flowers rose to lavender-blue, with dark curved mark at base of pointed petal, 6 low triangular appendages on ovary at center. Grows in forest openings, brushlands, at 1700–8500 ft. Similar A. bisceptrum grows in aspen groves and has leaves still green at flowering, flowers pale to dark pink. Also found on Mount Ashland.
