Woolly Pussytoes

Tufted, erect, densely woolly. Basal leaves 1–4 in. long, lance-shaped, wider at tip; stem leaves lance-shaped, progressively smaller, often with dark tips. Flower heads congested in rounded cluster at stem top. Female flower head cups formed of greenish black bracts; male flower head bracts with white tips. Grows in alpine or subalpine meadows or rocky slopes. The Latin word lanatus means "woolly."
