Clump. Stems few, erect, branched only in upper parts, matted white-hairy. Leaves oblong, divided into wavy shallow lobes ending in short yellow spines, longer on upper leaves. Leaves with matted hairs, gray on top, white below. Lower leaves with 6–12 in. spiny petioles. Flower heads on short, profusely leafy stalks. Flower head with bell-shaped, slightly hairy cup has spines spreading outward or downward and holds pink and white disk flowers. Grows in open dry areas at low to mid elevations.
