Woody shrub with many crowded upright stems. Leaves divided; leaflets 3–7, oval, with inrolled edges, pointed at tip, less than 1 in. long, entire, lightly covered with silky hairs. Flowers 1 to few at ends of twigs, with 5 yellow petals, many stamens. Grows in meadows, moist rocky slopes, at high elevations. Circumboreal. Often cultivated, where many attractive garden varieties have been produced.
