Erect stem from basal rosette. Stems with few opposite leaves at base up to 10 in. long. Leaves narrow, with very narrow white stripe down each edge, densely hairy to hairless. Flower cluster dense, near stem top. Flowers on short stalks, greenish white with pale blue tint; sometimes darker spots at petal tips or flower dark blue; 4 petals, center of each one with oblong fringed gland. Grows in dry, open, often rocky places at low to high elevations. Var. columbiana is pale to dark blue with darker spotting.
