Mission Bells

Stem erect, unbranched, with nodding flowers at top. Leaves on stem only, narrow, may be whorled below, alternate and erect above. Upper leaf axis with flower stalk bends to hold hanging, bowl-shaped, sometimes squared, top flower. Flower yellow to greenish yellow at base, checkered more or less with brown, red, or purple, petals lance-shaped, with pointed tips. Grows among shrubs or trees, where cool and moist, from coast to mid elevations. Fritillaria in Latin refers to the checkered mottling on the flowers. Affinis means "related to" or "similar to" and refers to this being the species that best represents the genus
