Upright to spreading stems from single root. Leaves opposite, middle and upper ones clasping stem, 1/2–1 in., widely oval to round, edges toothed to lobed. Flowers from leaf axils along upper stem. Flower consists of a red-purple tube, hairless inside, upper lip hood-like, about same length as lower lip. Grows in disturbed soils at low elevations.
