Skunk Cabbage

Plant foul-smelling. Leaves appearing at flowering, egg-shaped, deep green, elongate, to 1–2 ft. long and half as wide, overtaking the flower stalk, thick petiole graduating into thick midvein. Flowers yellow-green, numerous on stout spike partly surrounded by very large yellow bract. Grows in tree-shaded freshwater swamps, marshes, wet edges of streams, from coast to low elevations.
