Erect stem with few basal leaves. Leaves long, with narrow tapering tips, withering before flowering. Flowers 10–40 held in cluster on 12 in. stem. Deep rose or white petals, tips reflexed, inner 3 petals shorter than outer 3; 2 small leaf-like bracts under the cluster. Grows in open, usually rocky places below 6000 ft. When looking for clues, check for the distinctive odor usually found in this family.
