Erect stems easily broken away from roots. Lower stem hairy. Basal leaves divided, 3–15 lobes with rounded tips, hairless above, fine hairs on underside and edges; stem leaves few. Spike contains 2–20 flowers, each on a 1/2–2 1/2 in. finely haired stalk. Oblong, dark blue-purple flower sepals not reflexed; spur 1/2–3/4 in. long. Found in grasslands, open bushy places, primarily along coast.
