Clustered erect stems bear many leaves. Leaves oblong to lance-shaped, hairless except straight hairs along leaf edges; lowest leaves with petiole, dropping early; upper leaves sessile. Flower heads 1–3 with many purple to blue, or rarely white, narrow ray flowers, surrounding yellow disk. Grows in moist places, in woods, rocky slopes, meadows, at high elevations.
