Erect stem, rosette of leaves. Leaves bright green, 1–3 in. long, oblong to spoon-shaped, coarsely toothed; stem leaves smaller. Large head of bright yellow flowers atop stem arising from center of rosette. Flower petals 2/3–3/4 in. long, opening widely. Seedpods 2–3 in. long, about same width on all 4 sides, becoming twisted. Grows in rocky areas, sandy places, at 5000–7500 ft.
