Erect stem from base of large leaves. Basal and lower leaves carried by short petiole, broadly oval with pointed tip, 6–14 in. long; middle and upper leaves becoming smaller and sessile. Inflorescence consists of spike 4–15 in. long atop stem. Each flower head bears about 5 flowers in elongated cup created by 5–6 bracts. Grows in meadows, open areas, at high elevations.
