Plant erect, purplish or reddish, with fine hairs and glistening glands. Leaves green, divided into 3–5 lobes; upper leaves, bracts tipped red. Inflorescence is a dense head of deep yellow club-shaped flowers; lower lip consists of 3 deep pouches. Grows in large masses in grasslands and foothills.
