Basal leaves with erect sturdy flower stems. Leaves about 2 in. across, round in outline, divided to center into 5 lobes, unevenly toothed. Flowers large, single at stem tops, 5 greenish white to cream petals, many yellow stamens, the outer ones modified into flat structures. Flowering occurs just after snowmelt in high mountains.
