Basal tuft of leaves with erect stems, milky sap. Leaves pinnately lobed with narrow segments, lobe tips often rounded. Flowers yellow, single head with overlapping rows of square-tipped, toothed petals rising from wide cup of overlapping papery bracts 3–4 rows deep. Grows along coastline to 1500 ft. Although a native, resembles nonnative dandelion of gardens, lawns.
