Erect. Stems, leaves green with bristles. As stem unrolls, flowers bloom from bottom upward. Flowers have calyx with 5 lobes; tube yellow with wide unrestricted throat with or without red dots. Pale yellow-flowered forms usually do not have red dots in throat. Anthers appressed to stigma in throat. Abundant over a wide range in open ground from coastline to mid elevations. Self-pollinating var. menziesii (pictured) has no red dots in throat; found throughout the range, including Steens Mountain. Var. intermedia is yellow-orange with red-orange dots in throat; grows throughout the range.
