Mounding to flat perennial from single root. Leaves 2–5 in. long, narrow, flat, hairless, with linear veins. Flower petals and calyx pink, possibly white, in tight round head on hairless, leafless, unbranched stalks less than 16 in. high. Flower petals 5, calyx with 10 ribs, few hairs along ribs, 5 lobes with sharp tips. Grows in bluffs, grasslands, coastal sands, from sea level to 600 ft.
