Erect stems rising from woody base, with few clusters of small leaves. Leaves lance-shaped to linear, 1–2 in. long, may be lobed and toothed or entire, covered with white hairs beneath, hairless above. Flower heads on branches form narrow spike; small bell-shaped cups lightly coated with matted hairs hold ray and disk florets. Grows along shores of rivers, streams, below high water mark in Columbia River Gorge and through Cascade Mountain Range.
