Long-Tailed Ginger
Spreading evergreen, often in large mats. Brittle, horizontal, root-like rhizome just under soil. Leaves uniformly green, heart-shaped, in pairs with long petioles. Flowers at tip end of rhizomes, dark maroon or rarely green, 3 calyx tips tapering into long tails, inner surface of tube white with 1 red horizontal stripe. Grows in moist places on forest floors from coastline to high elevations. All asarums have the scent of ginger when touched or broken.
