Clump of upward-pointing leaves from woody base. Stalks of equal lengths. Leaves shiny green, 6–20 in. long, heart-shaped, entire, with obvious white central vein and vein network most noticeable on underside. Flower stems 1 to many, upright, about as long as the leaves, each holding a single flower head. Ray flowers 8–13, yellow, about 1 in. long, held after initial flowering, becoming papery. Grows mostly in steppe.
