Upright to spreading mat. Stems single or branched, with alternate linear to oblong leaves with rounded tips, flat, thick to fleshy. Flowers single in leaf axils. Petals 5, brilliant rose-red or rarely white, may have hairs around edges, stamens 3–15. Grows in vernal-wet, loamy, sandy soils, coastal turf, disturbed and cultivated places, at low to mid elevations. Cilia are the hairs on the edges of the pointed leaves and on the sepals.
