Erect unbranched stems, hairless or with few hairs. Leaves mostly on stems with long petioles, palmately divided, 3 egg- to lance-shaped leaflets to 3 in. long, widely toothed or lobed. Flowers clustered at stem top, petals 1/3–1/2 in. long, white or pale pink. Seedpods flat, linear, 1/2–1 1/2 in. long, erect on ascending stalks. Grows in shady, shrubby, or deep forests, along streams to high elevations.
