Upright, hairless. Stem slender, undivided. Leaf at base single, entire to shallowly lobed; 2 upper stem leaves with short petioles are divided into 3–5 oblong sessile leaflets 1/2–2 in. with sharply pointed tips. Flowers in showy cluster; petals 4, pale pink to purple or rarely white. Seedpods 3/4–2 in. long, narrow, ascending. Grows in deep humus soils in moist sites, forests, at low to mid elevations.
