Cluster. Stems erect, not vine-like. Leaves in pairs on stem; upper leaves pinnately divided 2 or 3 times, segments linear; lower leaves smaller, entire. Flowers urn-shaped, with long stalks. Flower nodding, leathery, rose on inside with purple on outside, long hairs on tube exterior, tips curved back. Seed with dense plumes to 2 in. long. Found in woods, often under pine, to about 6500 ft.
