Erect. Stem single, produces milky sap, branched usually only in upper half, hairy near base. Basal leaves lance-shaped, to 12 in. long, dark shiny green, toothed or divided; upper leaves reduced in size, clasping stem. Flower heads in open cluster, with yellow flowers. Grows in waste places, meadows, roadsides, even lawns, at low to mid elevations.
