Steer's Head
Prostrate to upright. Leaf single, basal, 2–3 1/2 in. long including stem, deeply dissected, with whitish waxy powder on underside. Flower stem slightly longer than leaf, holds single flower. Flower white to brownish, peach, or pink, more or less nodding, 2 outer petals almost flat, curved up and inward to form horns. Grows in gravelly soils, sometimes with serpentine rock, at low to high elevations. Similar D. pauciflora, shorthorn steershead, has leaves with numerous finely cut lobes, flowers with 2 short sepals appearing as short horns.
