One to several upright stems, milky sap. Stem branching in upper section. Leaves egg-shaped, usually with short petioles. Leaves near flowers sessile, wide at base to 1 in. long. Flowers with central cluster of stamens and 4 glands each with pair of points shaped like thick horns, 3-lobed ovary hanging to one side. Grows in shady sites in foothills and is widespread.
