Erect, shiny, usually branching stems. Leaves to 4 in. long, narrow, wider toward rounded tip, entire or with few small teeth; upper leaves clasping stem. Flower heads about 1 in. across, disk flowers with no rays. Slightly gummy bracts at base are recurved. Grows in vernal ponds, along streams, in sandy soils, along river shores.
