Erect stems branching from base, copper-red or yellowish but not varnished-looking. Leaves on stem, narrowly oblong, 1–3 1/2 in. long, finely toothed or entire; upper leaves sessile. Flower heads in wide bell-shaped cups created of bracts with tips rolled back into circle; 11–28 ray flowers surrounding disk of 20–50 flowers. Grows on dry sandy hills, along roads or dry fields, at low to mid elevations.
