Plant erect. Stems few, often reddish at base. Leaves few, lance-shaped to linear, hairless, entire, thick, leathery. Basal and lower stem leaves have short, winged petioles; upper leaves clasp stem, with narrow wings continuing down stem. Flower head usually single at stem top. Ray flowers 14–20, yellow; ball-shaped disk has yellow tubular flowers with 5 yellow, brown, red, or purple lobes. Grows in wet meadows, streambanks, sometimes in serpentine fens.
