Plant somewhat hairy throughout. Stem single, erect. Leaves in rosette, soft, hairy, 6 in. long, coarsely toothed, linear, with outside edges folded upward. Few smaller leaves on lower stems; upper stems bare. Flower head single, deep yellow, atop stem. Ray flowers 25–60; disk flowers many. Grows in talus, scree, or gravel among rocks in subalpine and alpine. Algida means "cold," reflecting the plant's occurrence in cold places, usually mountaintops.
