Stems erect, unbranched, often in small clumps. Leaves entire, in 3–4 whorls or scattered on upper stem; lower leaves linear, longer than wide. Flowers to 35, hanging or facing outward from stem top. Flower widely bell-shaped, with petals recurved back or rolled so point is toward back of petal; inner flower yellow-orange to orange; outer flower darker, spotted with magenta near tips. Stamens flare out, forming a bell-shaped profile. Pollen yellow to red-brown. Grows in streambanks, moist places, fens, often with Darlingtonia californica, California pitcher-plant.
