Fernleaf Lomatium
Large, upright, robust, shiny green. Stems hollow. Leaf petioles on lower stem 1–12 in. with blades 6–12 in. wide, finely divided into very narrow segments to 1/2 in. long, usually coated with fine hairs. Umbel borne on stems above foliage. Flowers chocolate red (rarely yellow), dense in small short-stalked clusters above very narrow bracts. Seeds short, to 3/4 in. long, oval. Grows in wooded or brushy slopes, talus and steep rocky slopes, at low to high elevations. Similar L. suksdorfii is hairless and always has yellow flowers.
