Black Twinberry
Shrub spreading to erect. Young stems square. Stem and leaves with glands, few hairs. Leaves opposite, egg-shaped, with pointed tip, 1–5 in. long, short petioles. Flowers in pairs, yellow, trumpet-shaped, with 5 lobes, surrounded by 2 pairs of large green to purple bracts. Berries 2, shiny black, in enlarged bright purplish or red bracts. Grows in moist forests, along streams, swamps, at all elevations except alpine. Var. involucrata is a 3–6 ft. widespread shrub with anthers exerted or equal the lobes. Var. ledebourii is a shrub to 12 ft. with anthers inside the tube; grows in Coast Range.
