Erect. Stems clustered, leafy. Leaves all about the same size, 3–6 in. long, linear to lance-shaped, with pointed tips, entire to sharply toothed; lower leaves with petioles, dropping before flowering; upper leaves sessile. Flower heads numerous, consisting of 1/4 in. high cup formed by about 13 bracts tipped black holding 8 yellow ray flowers around yellow disk. Grows in moist meadows, conifer forests, along streams, open places, at high elevations.
