Erect to prostrate annual, often overwintering. Stems have single row of wavy hairs running along one side. Leaves 1/3–1 3/4 in. long, egg-shaped, flat, shiny, entire. Flowers 1 to many in clusters near stem tips, bracts around flowers leaf-like. Flower petals white, 2-lobed, slightly shorter than sepals or missing. Grows in oak woods, meadows, disturbed soils. Often a weed in gardens and lawns. Native of southwestern Europe. Stellaria crispa, a hairless common native, is prostrate to spreading, often to 20 in. The white flowers are small, with very small or no petals.
