Stems erect, hairy in upper parts. Basal leaves fall before blooming; stem leaves sessile, narrow, lance-shaped, 2–6 in. long, entire. Inflorescence long and narrow with many leafy-bracted flower heads. Flowers with numerous white or pink ray flowers supported in a cup of green bracts of different lengths. Grows in moist to wet soils, often near streams.
