Phemeranthus spinescens
Woody-based stems crowded with leaves. Leaves succulent, green, 1/2–1 in. long, round at tip. Overwintering hardened midribs are spine-like. Flowers 6–12 in loose clusters open in the afternoon on leafless stems to 10 in. long. Flower with 5 magenta petals, 20–30 stamens. Grows in rocky places, outcrops in shrub-steppe, desert. Rare and endangered in Oregon, where it is endemic to Wasco and Jefferson counties, but somewhat more widespread in central Washington.
