Stem erect. Leaves 8–15 in., narrow, with rib down back. Flowers in wide loose head on stalks 1/3–3 in. long, blue, purple-blue, or white, long funnel-shaped tube with ovary, style hidden inside, anthers attached at 2 levels, blue or white pollen. Grows in clay soils in open woods, grassy areas, from coast to fairly high elevations. Often planted in gardens.
