Veronica rubra
Tuft of erect leaves, stems hairy when young, later hairless. Basal leaves with long petiole, blade widely oval, 1–5 in. long, toothed. Inflorescence tops stem, dense spike of flowers to 8 in. long. Flower calyx 3–4 often unequal lobes, petals absent, 2 stamens with dark red filaments. Grows in open woodlands, rocky meadows, at low to mid elevations.
