Silky Phacelia
Erect perennial, with dense covering of silver silky hairs. Stems from woody base often branched. Leaves lance-shaped to narrowly oblong, pinnately divided, often divided again, lobes rounded. Flowers in several smaller clusters along stem top form showy bottlebrush head. Flowers dark blue to purple, bell-shaped, with hairy calyx and conspicuous yellow or orange stamens extending out beyond petals. Drying petals persist in seed. Grows on ridges, in talus, near or above tree line. Sericea means "silky." Var. ciliosa has several clusters of numerous flowers held in long loose cyme.
